The outbursts made by the citizen of Aquem Margao are not well founded and the views not based on true facts.
The Council began desilting in December 2017 in a phased manner. Otherwise the entire town of Margao would have been submerged.
Engaging pre-monsoon workers is a matter of revenue and the necessary order has to come to all urban local bodies from DMA. This time we have received the order only on June 5, making it difficult to engage workers at this last moment as most workers take to farming during this period.
With our existing work force, one should applaud the work done by the Council and just not point fingers of accusation. Its quite easy to blame the Civic body but has any person questioned the other government departments which are also involved in cleaning the drains and the nallas? Did any person have the audacity of questioning them? One should also know the demography of Margao Town & the construction of drains done through the PWD.
There has been no study done of the volume of rain water and the carrying capacity of the drain. Haphazard construction of drains which cannot carry the volume of rain water has resulted in a bottleneck for one to see water logging in certain areas.
Over and above, civic sense amongst the public is grossly lacking because the storm water drains are used as garbage throwing canals.
Thus, in spite of the arduous work of desilting, the first shower of rains resulted in garbage choking the free flow of rain water in many parts of the city to which we have not just attended but personally supervised the works. I would appreciate if instead of criticizing, people from all walks of life, join hands & lend us the support in making Margao Town a better and cleaner place to live in.
