Dayne, Samira, Tanisha bag Geno Sports Awards

The Sports Journalists Association of Goa with support from Geno Pharmaceuticals Limited, will present the Geno Sports Awards 2017-18, on December 18 in Panaji.   

Power Minister Nilesh Cabral will be the chief guest for the awards day function. Geno Chairman & Managing Director Dilip Salgaocar announced the awardees during a press conference 

on Saturday.  

The awardees this year come from a varied range of sports and Salgaocar emphasised on their noteworthy performances, for deserving the recognition. “There are some persons or groups of people, who have shown their talent in fields so far unknown to many of us,” explained Salgaocar while disclosing the names of best sportsman: Dayne Coelho, best sportswoman: Samira Abraham, best team: Sqay martial art and best coach: Kashinath Nayak, among other recipients that include Tanisha Crasto (badminton) as the best emerging talent, Govt College-Quepem and Shree Damodar College-Margao as best girls and boys teams, while best photo-journalist award will be presented to Arvind Tengse of Times of India.  

Goa has produced many legends in football in particular, and Salgaocar was upbeat about the suggestion to institute a ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award from next year. This time though, a new addition to the awardees list comes in the form of a ‘Best electronic media journalist’ category, with HCN’s Alfred Fernandes bagging the 

honour.  

The best sportsman award winner windsurfer Dayne has many accolades to his name. He secured first place at National Board Sailing Championship in May 2018 after he finished third in RS:One at Singapore Open Asian Championship in February earlier in the year. Dayne also secured first place at Goa International Sailing Week in January, 2018. He had the honour of representing India at 18th Asian Games in Indonesia in September, 2018, where he finished eighth.  

Best sportswoman award winner, triathlete Samira Abraham represented Goa at the triathlon national championship in March, 2018 and won a gold medal. She also won a gold at the South Asian Championships in 

April, 2018.  

The best emerging player award winner, shuttler Tanisha Crasto represented Team India in sub-junior category at the Asian championship in Myanmar in October 2018 after a fantastic performance in the 2017-18 season. She has won several titles at national tournaments in the doubles and mixed doubles at the under-17 and under-19 level.

Best team of 2017-18, Goa sqay martial art team, bagged a medal haul of 92 gold, 55 silver and 44 bronze medal at the national championships across the cadets, sub-juniors, juniors and seniors category. The team had a haul of 42 gold, 11 silver and 7 bronze medals across the sub-junior, junior and seniors category, at the tri-nation championship held in Nepal.
