Goan Football Club came from a goal down to trounce Bardez Football Club 5-1 in a Goa Professional League match played at GFA grounds, here on Monday.

Though Bardez FC drew the first blood through striker Ong Lepcha, Goan FC came back strongly in the second session and hammered in five goals through Brian Faria, Lalawmpuia (2), Princeton Rebello and Varun Mathur.

Bardez Football Club having lost both their earlier matches saw their coach Savio Dsouza bring two changes Kalaiyarasen in the defense and Sandip Alay in the midfield. At the other end, Goan FC having four points from their last two matches, saw coach Clifford Miranda play Princeton Rebello in the midfield and Brian Faria in the defense.

Bardez FC stunned their opponents when striker Ong Lepcha collected a defense splitting pass from Carl D’Souza and beat am onrushing young Gaurs’ keeper Shubham Dhas with a neat goal to make it 1-0.

Bardez FC would have almost doubled their lead in the ninth minute, where a curling cross by U-20 Richard Cardoz inside the 6-yard box saw striker Cho Lepcha fail to connect the ball into the goal.

The young Gaurs built up their attack in the last 20 minutes of the match but it was Bardez keeper Urgen Pintso who came with three out of the blue saves to deny their opponents from getting their equalizer. In the 22nd minute striker, Lalawmpuia had just to get past keeper Urgen in a one to one situation but saw the keeper block his attempt.

Two more attempts went in vain for the young Gaurs when Kingslee Fernandes found striker Lalawmpuia inside the penalty box whose curling strike was kept to safety by keeper Urgen. Ten minutes later, Urgen came to his team’s rescue as he punched the ball over the post off a smart header by Lalhmangaihsanga off Imran’s corner.

The Young Gaurs came into the second session as a transformed unit. Early into the second half, a corner by Imran Khan saw Brian Faria rise high above the Bardez defenders and head the ball into the goal, to make it 1-1.

Energized by the equalizer, the young Gaurs almost extended their lead but Urgen blocked Nester Dias shot for a corner. In the space of three minutes, the young Gaurs hammered two more goals. In the 56th minute, Nestor sent a diagonal pass to Lalawmpuia who finished to the far corner of the goal with a stiff grounder to make it 2-1. Lalawmpuia was back in action when in the 59th minute he scored a gem of a goal with a 30-yard right footer leaving keeper Urgen rooted to the ground to make it 3-1.

In the last five minutes of the match, the young Gaurs pumped in two more goals where Princeton Rebello’s strike brushed keeper Urgen’s gloves as the ball rolled into the goal and then in the added time, substitute Varun Mathur added his name to the scorers list to make it 5-1.

JOEL ANDRADE   PANAJI   In the corridors of power of football administration in the country, Churchill Alemao is synonymous with football. “When I go to Delhi to meet the football bosses, they say ‘football aa gaya (football has arrived)’. They are very fond of me,” quips Churchill in his customary declamatory style.   Indeed ‘football’ has arrived in Goa, and how. The former chief minister and sitting Benaulim MLA was on Sunday elected…
