Prime Minister Narendra Modi often speaks of his humble beginnings as a chaiwala at a railway station in Vadnagar, Gujarat. However, questions about his educational qualifications and his responses to the media have continued to fuel public debate. During the COVID-19 pandemic, appeals to bang pots, pans and steel plates became prominent symbolic gestures. Many citizens, however, expected concrete measures and practical solutions to deal with the health crisis. India has also witnessed concerns over religious tensions and communal harmony. Modi’s responses, or perceived silence on certain issues, have prompted questions about his commitment to maintaining unity and addressing divisions. His promise of Rs 15 lakh in every citizen’s bank account has likewise become a symbol of unmet expectations for many people. Such controversies have contributed to public scepticism about political promises and accountability. Ultimately, leadership must be judged by transparency, action and the fulfilment of commitments. Citizens deserve honest answers, responsible governance and genuine efforts to unite the country, rather than rhetoric that raises expectations without adequate results.
