Following in the footsteps of other common entrance tests in various disciplines, the Supreme Court validated the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to MBBS and BDS courses for the coming academic year and beyond. The first test will be held on May 1, with the second on July 24.
All government colleges, deemed universities and even private medical colleges will be covered under NEET; any exams that have already taken place have been scrapped and would now have to be retaken. This is certainly a boon for students who otherwise had to appear for separate examinations to get on to the eligibility lists in different colleges. In this day and age, it’s imperative to make things easier for students to gain admission. There were doubts on the fact that this decision comes just a few days before the first entrance test and there might be complications, but there are hopes that the government is prepared in that regard and will solve any issues in time for the second test in July.
There will always be teething problems with decisions like this but the bottom line is that it was a long time coming and as such should be welcomed.
