Thirsty Canacona

Goan villages have been historically hit with water problems, more especially in summers with successive governments assuring of solutions. Last year, the then chief minister Laxmikant Parsekar took the issue in his stride and went on record to state that there is no water crisis in Goa, barring a few places. Parsekar made a mention of Bardez taluka facing water issues along with his home constituency of Mandrem, while surprisingly ignoring far-away Canacona.
In a repeat of last year, several parts of Canacona, a place which was hit by flash floods in 2009, have been hit by water scarcity, with erratic supply of tanker water adding to their woes. Parts of Cotigao and Gaondongrem have been thirsting for water for several days and have to be content with water supply once every three to four days. Alternatively, villagers are forced to go miles to dig up water from the ground. Nothing has changed for these villagers over the years. In an age where bridges and flyovers and electronic cities are taking shape with Goa moving fast on development, Canacona has been struggling with the basics. The new government which swears by Goenkarponn should feel the pulse of these villagers and come up with a lasting solution for our very own thirsting Goenkar.
