"I want to get good marks. But I don't want to study"

Tongue tied

I proposed to one of my best friends a couple of months back and she, in a way, turned me down. It affected our conversations greatly. But a few weeks ago, I thought of initiating a conversation on facebook and it really went on well. But when she comes face to face with me, I don’t know what to do and we both behave as we don’t know each other. I have tried to talk to her personally but I don’t know what to say. Any suggestions please?

Bob

Hello there loverboy!

Well, what I would love to know first, is what you mean by ‘she, in a way, turned me down’? As far as I know, she either turned you down, or she didn’t. So, when you say ‘in a way’, it really intrigues me. Did she let you down so gently that you were not sure what happened, but you know you didn’t get the girl? If so, I’d love to meet her, I need to teach my daughter that skill. I got boys chasing her and she doesn’t have the courage to tell them that she doesn’t like them. I suggested tying rakhis on raksha bandhan, but my son thinks that karma will get HIM, if she does that. So to ensure that he gets a girlfriend, she’s back to square one. Anyway, why don’t you try having a few more conversations on facebook to begin with, and get back to some level of comfort. Then meet up with her for coffee and try and replicate those conversations, or follow up on anything left unsaid there. It might take a while but you can become friends again. Of course, this also depends on your intentions. Are you fine with being friends or is this some way to get back into her good books? Whatever you intend doing, just take it easy. Baby steps, as they say. Rushing into anything never worked for anyone. Only fools rush in, or so they say.

The smart guy

I want to get good marks. But I don't want to study. Please help!

WS

Wow WS,

You really know how to make it in life. Let me paint you a picture. Don’t study. Just go through life by starting something and then trying to find the easy way out. If you want to drive a car, buy an automatic car, so you don’t have to learn how to drive stick. Then, to make things even easier for yourself, hire a driver. Of course, you need to make some money to do that, but you don’t have an education, so you can’t get a job. You could do something like become a car mechanic, but for that you have to get your hands dirty. Even dishwashers do. You’re stuck. You have nothing. That car just vanished into thin air, so did you prospects in life. All this, because you don’t want to study. Shame on you! Why don’t you start doing something in earnest for a change? Wait, are you my son? Ronnie, is that you? Pfft!

Easy peasy stuff

I want to become a foodie. I love eating and apparently foodies get to eat out a lot. They don’t have to pay and all they have to do is praise the food and take some Instagram pics. Is it really so easy?

Gita

Seriously Gita,

What is with all of you wanting to do things the easy way? My parents taught me the value of hard work. In fact, one of the songs we heard as kids was that of an old lady who swallowed a fly, and then other animals. She died. But she had the guts to swallow so many things. That song taught us how to steel ourselves. Okay, just kidding. But still, do you really think that all it takes to become a ‘foodie’ is a penchant for eating food and taking pictures? Let me guess, you’re in your twenties and mummy or daddy told you that you become anything you wanted to? They’re right, but what they forgot to mention, perhaps because they didn’t think it was necessary to say it out loud, is that you HAVE TO WORK HARD to get there. They worked hard. Everything you eat, sleep on or play with, is paid by them. Do you think they did that by taking pics of the food they were eating? Sheesh!
