If the worldwere made of artists alone, one could have a glimpse of this world atChitrankan “ Contemporary Painters Camp which was recently held in Panjim andwas jointly organised by the Department of Art and Culture and West ZoneCultural Centre, Udaipur.
The Campwitnessed the participation of 12 artists from different states of Indiaincluding two from Goa. Every artist had to produce two pieces of work, one ofwhich would be in the possession of the Department of Art and Culture and theother for the West Zone Cultural Centre. “This is a great platform for eachparticipating artist to learn about the temperament and styles of other artistsand other regions,” says Ramdas Gadekar, participating artist from Goa.
While R N Singhfrom Chandigarh took inspiration from the several waterfalls, the hills and thesea as he travelled to Goa by train and made all this the subject of hispaintings, Archna Yadav from Bhopal says her paintings are abstract. “I do notlike constraining creativity with forms and labels. Calling a painting abstractis a label,” she says. Artist Rupesh Bhagvan Hirugade HOD of the PaintingDepartment at Bharati vidyapeeth in Pune painted the nine planets in one of hispaintings, but he used different textures, even using wax to get the kind oftexture he required.
Ramdas Gadekarand Salvador Fernandes were the two participating artists from Goa. WhileFernandes’ painting showed that nothing is permanent “ his paintings depicteddecay “ Gadekar captured human gestures and expressions in his paintings. NaushadH Gayoor, a member of the faculty of Applied Art at the University of Kashmir, isa landscape painter. He says one of his paintings is named Distantly Yoursbecause it attempts to relate Goa and Kashmir through water. “I was born in Dalgatein Srinagar. There was a water body called Dal Lake near my house where I usedto swim after school. I cannot anymore as it is dirty. My paintings are a cryagainst concretisation. Every one of my paintings depict Dal Lake and the CharChinar island with its four beautiful trees,” says Gayoor.
