A landscaped-garden in memory of late Shiv Sena supremo BalThackeray would come up at historic Shivaji Park.
The decision was arrived at after series of meetings at theBrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) headquarters on Tuesday “ hours afterShiv Sainiks removed the temporary structure at the place in the Shivaji Park,where the mortal remains Thackeray were consigned to flames.
Thackeray, 86, passed away on November 17 at Matoshree, hisresidence at Bandra, after prolonged illness, and was cremated on November 18at the Shivaji Park “ for which the Maharashtra Government accorded specialpermission. Since then, Shiv Sainiks have been guarding the “samadhi-sthal”.
The site for the landscaped-garden would be off the grandstatue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the great Maratha warrior, in theShivaji Park.
“A landscaped-garden would come up in memory of the Senasupremo,” Mumbai Mayor Sunil Prabhu said.
Earlier, in the day, the group leaders discussed the issueof the memorial in detail “ but taking into aspects legal and technical issues,it was decided to have a garden “ as the civic administration has ruled out anyphysical construction. “We would get the legal and technical issues examined byadvisors,” the Mayor said.
In a post-midnight operation, Shiv Sainiks removed thetemporary structure “ after weeks of tussle with the Maharashtra Government andthe civic administration.
Senior Shiv Sena leader Subhash Desai, Prabhu supervised theexercise to remove the temporary structure.
