The Goan community hailing from Benaulim gathered in Woodside High School Hall in North London on June 24 to celebrate the Feast of St John the Baptist, the patron saint of their village.
The Benaulim Association UK, which has been preserving Goan heritage since it was founded in 1985, organised a vibrant event that showcased the community's deep-rooted faith and rich traditions.

The day began with a solemn celebration of the Holy Eucharist celebrated by Fr Patrick De Souza, who led the community in prayer and thanksgiving. The festivities continued with an array of traditional Goan delicacies and snacks provided by Suntop Caterers, reminding everyone of the region's culinary heritage.
To create an atmosphere filled with joy and excitement, DJ Vinny ensured that the celebrations were accompanied by lively music. The rhythmic beats and melodies encouraged people of all ages to come together on the dance floor and revel in the vibrant ambience.
One of the highlights of the day was a unique traditional game involving coconuts. Participants showcased their skills by rolling coconuts trying to break their opponent’s coconut. This year, the friendly competition was won by the guest team. This age-old game not only entertained the crowd but also served as a testament to the enduring traditions that have been passed down through generations.
Besides the merriment and jubilation, the Benaulim Association also exemplified their commitment to charitable causes. Over the years, the Association has donated money to those in need. This year, a portion of the proceeds were donated to an old-aged home in Benaulim.
The present committee consists of Santan Fernandes (President), Josephine Fernandes (Vice President), Joaquim Fernandes (Treasurer), Filu Mendes (Secretary) and Mary Alfonso, Martin Dias, Anna Fernandes, Jaliza Fernandes, Chris Fernandes, Francis D’Silva and Ansel Rodrigues (committee members).
The committee is also supported by other Benaulkars, their respective spouses, children and friends who include Cyril Pereira, Peter Pereira, Lucas Fernandes, Tony D’Souza, Paixao Colaco, Gasper Fernandes, John Fernandes, Vita Fernandes and Robert Fernandes.
“While the Benaulim Association takes pride in its long-standing traditions, it is also actively seeking to involve younger members in its endeavours. They firmly believe that the youth are vital for the continuity and vitality of their culture and are eager to encourage their active participation,” said Benaulim Association UK President Santan Fernandes.
“The feast of St John the Baptist is not only a celebration but also a reminder of the resilience and unity of the Benaulkars. Through their unwavering commitment to preserving their heritage and fostering a strong sense of community, the Benaulim Association sets an inspiring example for future generations.”
“As the echoes of this year's feast fade away, the Benaulim Association eagerly looks forward to the next celebration, hoping to attract young Benaulkars who are passionate about keeping their culture and traditions alive. Their steadfast dedication ensures that the flame of Goan heritage continues to burn brightly for years to come.”
