The Goan Community Aberdeen (GCA) has been hailed for its dedication and commitment to celebrate Goan culture in Aberdeen, with the association receiving a grant from the National Lottery Community team in Scotland.

A motion was submitted to the Scottish Parliament by MSP Kevin Stewart on November 6, 2023 to recognise the GCA’s success, stated Laura Ferns, Secretary of GCA.

“The GCA also received a letter from MP for Aberdeen South Stephen Flynn from the House of Commons to congratulate the significant milestone which reflects the dedication and commitment to celebrate the Goan culture in Aberdeen,” Laura said.

On August 15, the GCA received a grant of £4,500 from the National Lottery Community team.”

In his letter to the GCA, Flynn congratulated the entire Goan Community Aberdeen on securing the National Lottery funding.

“This is a significant and well-deserved milestone which reflects your dedication and commitment to celebrating Goan culture in Aberdeen,” said Flynn.

He praised the GCA for consistently demonstrating its passion for promoting and sharing the rich cultural heritage of Goa within the local community.

“I am pleased to hear that this grant will further enhance your efforts through a programme of weekly activities, events, and celebrations. It is through initiatives like yours that we create a more vibrant and diverse society. Your dedication to enriching the cultural tapestry of Aberdeen is indeed commendable,” added Flynn, while assured his support to assist the GCA going forward.

The GCA has also been involved in a number of activities ever since it was registered as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) on June 1, 2023, the first Goan community to be recognised as a SCIO not only in Aberdeen, but in whole of Scotland.

The GCA recently raised £350 for MacMillan Cancer Support and continues to host events, such as Valentines Day, World Goa Day, Easter Dinner & Dance, Children’s Day, Feast Masses, Coffee Mornings, etc.

In addition to these events, the GCA organised a Dinner and Dance Christmas party on December 23 at The Aberdeen Altens Hotel Souterhead Road, Aberdeen, which was attended by over 150 members and non-members.

Foot tapping music was provided by 'Oceanix', while festive food was served and catered by the Aberdeen Altens Hotel.

Councillor Steve Delaney, the Deputy Provost of Aberdeen and his wife, Eileen, were guests of honour at the event.  The highlight of the evening was the Star & Festive Hat competition. There were also jive, waltz and cha cha cha cha competitions.

“The GCA will continue to promote the Goan Culture and help create a vibrant and diverse society,” said Laura.

“The GCA (SCIO) President Sydon Fernandes and team would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support and generosity for GCA.”
