USA-based long-distance runner Francis Borges has received a 6-star medal from Abbott World Major Marathons and thus joins a select group of runners who have a unique record in their kitty.

The Cuncolim-born runner, who works as a Global Head of a Food Value Chain, got the medal for his feat of taking part in the six top marathon races of the world.

The Abbott World Marathon Majors is a series consisting of six of the largest and most renowned marathons in the world: Tokyo Marathon, Boston Marathon, TCS London Marathon, BMW Berlin Marathon, Bank of America Chicago Marathon and TCS New York City Marathon.

Francis has been supporting and promoting many social causes in different countries including his home state of Goa and has, so far, competed in 11 marathons and several other half-marathons including races in India.

“I took part in the 127th Boston Marathon to raise money for the American Red Cross of Massachusetts, who do great work for a cause that's very close to my heart,” said Francis.

Based in Durham, North Carolina, Francis went to the Our Lady of Health High School, Cuncolim and pursued further studies at Chowgule Higher Secondary School, St Xavier's College, Mapusa and higher education in Mumbai.

“I have done fundraising at each of my marathons. My colleagues, friends and family have supported me with generous donations and best wishes,” he added.

Talking about his 11 marathons overall and the sixth one which gave him the unique record Francis said: “This was my 11th marathon. But more importantly, this was my 6th marathon to complete the Abbott World Marathon Majors. So, six cities, three continents, one remarkable goal,” said Francis, who is an avid football fan.
