While our CM goes around tom tomming that Goa has the best crime detection rate in the country, a report by the government’s ‘Victim Assistance Unit’ (VAU) unequivocally states that every week five women and children are the target of criminal activities in the state out of which at 22% cases pertain to sexual, physical or verbal abuse.
Numbers also show that 50% of children who are victims of crime are in the extremely vulnerable 0-15 year age group. While most of the Goa police force is either focused on VIP security duty, drug offences or burglaries no meaningful numbers are deployed for protecting our women and children.
In fact the police had issued orders for deputing a lady PSI to VAU but it has not been implemented; this hampers police facilitation and collection of evidence after medical examination in a timely manner.
The sarkar would be well advised to confront the elephant in the room by setting up a dedicated police unit to take swift and exemplary action against perpetrators of such crimes.
