The first promotional run of the forthcoming, 10th Goa River Marathon (GRM)was held in the Verna industrial estate on Sunday, August 11. The 10th GRM is scheduled to be held on Sunday, November 17 this year.
Close to 400 runners participated in this promotional run of 10kms and 21kms which was organised along a very scenic route by the Vasco Sports Club, organisers of the GRM. Participants included runners from the various running clubs of Goa, the Indian Navy and employees of the Verna based companies.
This year, the GRM organisers have taken a decision to make the event ‘plastic free’ and the theme of the run will be ‘Run for Green Goa’. Keeping in line with the theme, water was dispensed in paper cups along the route and the hot breakfast too was served in plates made from arecanut leaves. Each participant was presented with saplings of jamun and pomegranate at the finish line and Miguel Braganza, eminent organic plant promoter gave a talk on planting saplings.
The other highlight included the presence of veteran marathoner, Jaya Kulkarni (67), who despite poor health completed the 5km run and gave a pep talk to fellow runners.
Over the years, the GRM has acquired a reputation of being one of the better organised marathons in the country and sees participation from all over India and abroad. The event provides an impetus to the Goan tourism industry.
The online promotion of the event has commenced and the total participation is expected to cross 10,000 nos.
Registrations to the event can be done online at www.goarivermarathon.com.
