Goacan has organised a Green Consumer Awareness Campaign which began on April 22, Earth Day, and will continue till May 22, International Day for Biological Diversity. During the awareness campaign, Consumer Forum volunteers promote discussions on the themes like “Protect our threatened and endangered species” and “Our Biodiversity, Our Food, Our Health.”
Forum volunteers also undertake special drives at the local level to collect used batteries and e-waste, promote the use of the soap nut and solar energy, encourage rain water harvesting, and create awareness about protecting frogs from being poached this monsoon.
A press statement issued by Goacan co-ordinator Rolland Martins states that consumer forum volunteers will be taking steps to promote the importance of the Biodiversity Management Committee, Village Water and Sanitation Committee, and the Village Garbage Management Committee at the forthcoming village Gram Sabha meetings.
During the campaign, Forum volunteers will meet officials of the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB), Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC), Goa Energy Development Agency(GEDA) and the Goa State Biodiversity Board (GSBB) inorder to understand the role and responsibility of the agencies.
A special effort will also be made by Forum volunteers to promote organic farming and kitchen gardening, and mobilise support for the forthcoming Konkan Fruit Fest to be organised in Panaji by the Botanical Society of Goa (BSG).
