With both groups tied at six votes each, luck favoured the Congress-backed councillor Ansira Khan, when she was elected in a draw of lots as deputy chairperson of Sankhali Municipal Council (SMC) on Thursday.
The election was necessitated following the demise of SMC deputy chairperson Damodar Ghadi and the two rival groups backed by the BJP and Congress had six members each in the 13-member council.
At a special meeting to elect the deputy chairperson on Thursday, Anand Kanekar from the BJP-backed group and Ansira Khan from the Congress-backed group bagged six votes apiece from councillors of their respective groups.
The election officer Praveenjay Pandit then decided that the election would be decided in a draw of lots and Khan was declared the winner.
Khan later told reporters that she would implement the development plan of Sankhali municipality by taking all councillors into confidence.
Meanwhile, six-councillors from the Congress-backed group have moved a no-confidence motion against SMC Chairperson Yashwant Madkar, who is from the BJP-backed group.
