Even as most shops and establishments were shut in Canacona for the second day, the Canacona Nagrik Samiti (CNS) has sought an extension of the four-day lockdown by three more days to break the Covid chain.
Except for medical stores and shops dealing in essential supplies, all other shops and establishments were closed for the second day as part of the statewide lockdown till Monday morning.
Canacona Police conducted strict checks all over the taluka and fined all those not wearing facemasks.
CNS Coordinator Shantaji Naikgaunkar has, however, appealed to Canconcars to continue the shutdown for three more days from Monday to virtually help in breaking the chain.
“It may impact the livelihood of Canaconcars, but the situation regarding Covid infections is grave in the taluka. We believe that a four-day lockdown is too short and we appeal to our business fraternity to continue this lockdown for three more days from Monday.’
“This should definitely help break the Covid chain that has wreaked havoc in Canacona people since the last several days,” said Naikgaunkar.
Meanwhile, sources said the Covid cases have been on the rise with 45 new cases being detected on Saturday, taking the number of active cases to 539 in Canacona taluka.
On Friday, 58 new cases were detected and eight patients were discharged from home isolation, informed Canacona CHC Health Officer Dr Jose Tavares.
The overall number of Covid cases in the taluka has also crossed the 1,500 mark and is presently at 1,541 cases.
According to sources, a part of Delem ward in Canacona municipality has been declared as a micro-containment zone, after several Covid cases were detected in the area.
