MARGAO
Section 53 of the Goa Panchayat Raj Act mandates the Panchayat Director to fill up the vacancy of sarpanch and deputy sarpanch within a period of 60 days from the date of occurrence of such vacancy.
Welcome to Colva panchayat, where it’s now exactly 60 days since outgoing Sarpanch Anthony alias Mam Fernandes had quit office to pave way for his successor to take over reigns as per the arrangement worked out by the ruling group.
By now, a new sarpanch ought to have assumed office if one goes by the Goa Panchayat Raj Act. It’s now, however, clear that Colva will get a new sapranch only in the first week of June.
While the Panchayat Director could not fill up the vacancy of Colva sarpanch within the last 60 days, Director Siddi Halarnkar on Tuesday issued a notice to hold the election for vacant post of sarpanch on June 4.
