Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte has set up a special Covid vaccination centre in Porvorim constituency for the 18-44 age group in the Salvador do Mundo panchayat hall at Salai.
This vaccination centre will come under the jurisdiction of the Porvorim Primary Health centre.
Since Porvorim PHC has limited staff, members of Rotary Club of Porvorim have volunteered to assist the PHC staff in discharging their duties.
The Rotary club of Porvorim has also provided drinking water to the 18-44 age group who have come for vaccination.
Porvorim Constituency now has two vaccination centres, one for the 45-plus age group at Sanjay School and another for the 18-44 age group at Salvador do Mundo panchayat hall.
Meanwhile, Khaunte has written to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant stating that more vaccination centres should give way to multiple vaccination points in each locality under the responsibly of MLAs, sarpanchs and councillors irrespective of political affiliations.
“Mobile vaccination units can be placed at the disposal of MLAs with direction to coordinate the vaccination drive,” said Khaunte.
Khaunte said he disagreed on the methodology put forth by the chief minister that each panch member or councillor should encourage 10 people to take the vaccination.
“This is an under-utilisation of elected representatives who can play much more constructive role in the vaccination drive if taken into confidence. Each of these local representatives have a clear working knowledge of the demographics of their areas.”
“This knowledge will help in covering as well as identifying and vaccinating senior citizens, physically challenged and other such persons who cannot make it to the vaccination centre,” said Khaunte.
