The no-confidence motion against Sankhali Municipal Council (SMC) Chairperson Yeshwant Madkar fizzled out on Monday, after six councillors did not turn up at the meeting and the returning officer later dismissed the motion.
Following the death of a councillor, the 13-member SMC has been reduced to 12 members and there are six members in each group. One group led by former SMC chairperson Dharmesh Saglani had moved a no-confidence motion against SMC Chairperson Yeshwant Madkar.
A special meeting was convened in the SMC hall on Monday to discuss the no-confidence motion and during the meeting, six councillors, Dharmesh Saglani, Jyoti Blagen, Raya Parsekar, Ansira Khan, Rajesh Sawal and Kunda Madkar were present. However, the other group comprising Yeshwant Madkar, Brahma Desai, Shubhadha Sawaikar, Anand Kanekar, Dayanand Boryekar and Rashmi Desai did not turn up for the meeting.
The returning officer then rejected the no-confidence motion on grounds that the majority was not attained by the councillors present at the meeting. Later, Saglani told reporters that they would approach the high court demanding immediate elections to fill the vacant post of the councillor who had passed away.
