‘Matka kings’ worried lot in Cortalim

While confusion prevailed over scrapping of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes among residents and the business community in Cortalim, the worst effected were the matka bookies.

CORTALIM

Cortalim and neighbouring villages which play a host to number of bookies and gambling dens, did not have much business due to shortage of small denomination currency notes.
“We are told by our boss not to accept Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes,” a matka bookie told The Goan.
The government’s move to scrap the higher denomination notes were however largely welcomed by the residents.
“Yes, this move will checkmate matka kings who want to contest elections at the cost of people who have lost their hard earned earnings by gambling and playing matka,” a resident, told The Goan.
Infact, there are many candidates in various constituencies including Cortalim who have announced their intention to contest the Assembly elections.
With the scrapping of high denominations notes, it is very likely that their unacounted money which have been stacked for elections has lost its monetary value since it is no longer a legal tender.
