New schedule for 5 civic bodies, polling to be held on March 21

PANAJI

With the Supreme Court granting interim stay on the High Court order, the State Election Commission on Thursday swung into action, revoked its earlier order and re-announced elections to five municipal councils -- Margao, Mapusa, Mormugao, Sanguem and Quepem.

SEC in its fresh election schedule has extended nomination time by two days and now aspiring candidates will be able to file nominations till March 6.

The polling will be held on March 21, a day after the polling for other municipal councils. The code of conduct has been restored in these five municipal councils.

However, all eyes will be on the final order of Supreme Court in this matter which is slated next week on Tuesday.

Earlier, SEC had suspended the election process in five municipal councils following an order of High Court setting aside the election notification due to alleged irregularities in the reservation process.
