Aam Admi Party (AAP) Benaulim MLA, Venzy Viegas has said the need or otherwise of any anti-conversion law in Goa is an unnecessary debate especially when hard-pressing issues confront the State and beg attention and action from the government and all of us.
He said there hasn't been an occasion for lawmakers of Goa in over 60 years to either debate or act on this matter and there is nothing to warrant it now.
“Enough provisions exist in the Indian Penal Code and other laws for the government and law enforcement to deal with isolated cases of unlawful religious conversions if any in Goa”, he said.
He also said, “Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and his government will do well to rather concentrate on tackling governance issues which directly affect the common citizen -- price rise, preparedness to face the fury of monsoon, state of our schools which will reopen soon, health services, roads, erratic power and water supply, etc. Let's get our priorities right for the sake of Goa and our people”.
