Active Covid cases galloping in Bardez, nears 2,000-mark

Porvorim turns out to be epicentre for spread in taluka

MAPUSA
Active Covid cases are galloping in Bardez with Porvorim turning out to be the epicentre for the spread of Coronavirus infection.

The total active cases in Bardez are inching towards the 2,000-mark with Porvorim primary health centre alone contributing 615 of those cases on Sunday followed by Mapusa urban health centre and Candolim primary health centre recording 453 and 440 active cases respectively.

The other three primary health centres Siolim (177), Aldona (137) and Colvale (119) have also shown the rising trend of Coronavirus infection.

The surge in Porvorim has followed a predictable trend as maximum cases were reported from that same area last year.

According to the Health Officer of Porvorim PHC Dr Vikas Naik most of the incidents that have shown an increase in positive cases came from urban areas.

“Since Porvorim is highly urbanized there is a movement of a large number of people in this area. Government officials and people who are involved in commercial activities come to Porvorim. Therefore this area is more crowded and more congested compared to any other area,” Dr Naik said.

He said when these people get Covid like symptoms they come to the Porvorim PHC for testing and that could be one of the reasons for the increase in figures.

He informed that locals and people from other states were equally infected and responsible for the rise in the Covid cases.

Health Officer of Mapusa Urban Health Centre, Dr Cheryl D’Souza said the spurt in the positive case was a concern but wanted more people to come for tests in the initial stage rather than wait for things to turn serious.

Incidentally, three persons out of 11 Covid deaths reported on Sunday were from Mapusa.
