Fishermen from Benaulim have once again come to the rescue by freeing a sea turtle entangled in a damaged fishing net on Wednesday.
Pele Fernandes, Agnelo Fernandes, and others from the group spotted the struggling turtle ensnared in the water and promptly rushed to its aid. Pele, aboard his craft, released the turtle back into the sea, while a group of foreign tourists applauded the fishermen's efforts in conserving marine life.
Pele recounted how he and Agnelo, along with fellow fishermen, sprang into action upon spotting the distressed turtle. "We brought the turtle ashore, removed the net, and released it back into the sea," he said.
Highlighting the community's commitment to marine conservation, Pele remarked, "This isn't the first time Benaulim fishermen have rescued sea turtles caught in damaged nets. We ensure that these turtles are freed and returned to their natural habitat. It's our way of contributing to the protection of our ecology, environment, and marine resources."
Meanwhile, Pele also caught a large fish, locally-known as Gobro, during the expedition. "After rescuing the turtle and setting it free, we were rewarded with a big catch ” a Gobro weighing approximately 12 kilograms," he added.
