Amid objections by locals from Betim to the Captain of Ports (CoP) Jetty, the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) on Thursday inspected the jetty being constructed near the Panaji-Betim ferry ramp and claimed that the work is being undertaken as per approvals.
“I do not see any problem with the work as it has been approved by the CoP,” said CCP Mayor Rohit Monserrate, after inspecting the jetty under construction.
Saligao MLA Kedar Naik and several locals from Reis Magos, Britona and surrounding areas had protested at the offices of the CoP and River Navigation Department (RND) at Betim and objected to the ongoing work of the jetty, which they claimed is being constructed to facilitate embarking and disembarking of visitors to casinos operating in Mandovi River.
They had alleged that work on the jetty had led to frequent disruptions in the ferry service along the Betim-Panaji ferry route.
“I enquired about the project with the CoP and was informed that the Captain project work is fine,” said Monserrate.
“CoP officials must have done their research before granting any permissions. The CoP would not have given permission to the construction of a jetty for the casino if it posed problems to ferry boats along the Betim-Panaji ferry route," he added.
Meanwhile, some Corporators are not happy with the work and voiced their apprehensions to the CCP mayor during their inspection of the jetty work.
Some corporators were not convinced with clarifications put forth by the CoP.
