CANACONA
In an indirect reference to the IIT Goa, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant hinted at allotting the top educational institution to Canacona.
Sawant was speaking at the Vijay Sankalp Purti Melava, where he along with five others, he was felicitated by the Canacona BJP Mandal and Canacona Nagrik Samiti. During his speech, Sawant said, "I will keep an eye on bringing people oriented projects in Canacona; especially as we are going to bring a lot of changes on the tourism front and all his (local MLA Ramesh Tawadkar's) identified projects that will benefit the people of Canacona. Only day before yesterday he mentioned to me that he had identified an area and if a big educational project comes to Canacona we could utilise government or other available land and that would help Canconcars. I assure you that a big and better education project will come to Canacona," Sawant said.
"And with the assistance of central funds, the type of handicrafts projects which has been brought to Sanguem, efforts will be made to bring a similar project or food processing unit or new innovation unit which can provide employment to the children of Canacona."
It may be recalled that the Chief Minister had recently made an announcement that the decision to allocate/finalise the land for IIT-Goa will be taken within three months. The IIT-Goa campus initially planned in Bhagwati Plateau in Loliem village in Canacona was opposed, forcing the government to shift it out of the taluka, while it met similar fate in Sanguem and thereafter at Melauli in Sattari.
According to reports, soon after assembly elections, Tawadkar had informally sought suggestions from people in position if IIT could be brought to Canacona.
