With the dark web becoming a prime tool for criminals to fearlessly carry out drug trafficking and financial fraud, Goa Police concedes lack of awareness among law enforcement agencies and the technological world.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a Cyber awareness session for government computer teachers, Director General of Police Jaspal Singh stated that encryption technique and anonymity are one of the biggest challenges faced by the authorities.
"Dark web is an area which is an international network though the governments all over the world are trying to co-operate with each other. It is an area where there's not much awareness among law enforcement and even in the technological world because the data travels over wireless network," he said.
Goa has been reporting quite a few drug cases where buyers are browsing the dark web to buy narcotics. A recent interstate meeting of police officials also discussed the issue comprehensively. The misuse of this space has been giving a tough time to the police to attain sufficient information to crack down on criminals exploiting it who remain untraceable.
"It is a complex interconnection of various networks around the world. It is a layer of different networks where nobody knows the source but as I said the government is working hard on this and we will discover a system to clamp down on these criminals," Singh said.
