While the State has received record rainfall in the last 48 hours, taps in parts of Mapusa went dry catching locals by surprise.
Feria Alta, Housing Board, Ansabhatt, Shetya-vaddo, Duler, Peddem and some other areas did not get PWD pipeline water supply for the last couple of days.
Upset residents complained that they did not expect the PWD to act in such an irresponsible manner and cut off the supply without any warning.
“It has been raining so heavily and we hear that all the dams in the State are almost full. I don’t understand why we have to undergo this misery,” said Rima Kanolkar, a housewife.
Locals also slammed the government for taking the lead to increase the water tariff but did not show the same enthusiasm in giving good service to its citizens.
“We do not mind to pay a little extra for the water supply. But the government should at least ensure that we get proper and regular supply. In any case, a sudden cut in supply is definitely not acceptable,” said another resident.
Sources in the PWD pointed fingers to the Assonora Treatment Plant stating that Mapusa did not get adequate supply from the treatment plant.
“If there is no water in the overhead tanks how can we release water to the people?” a PWD official said.
Sources at the Assonora Treatment Plant informed that due to heavy rain a lot of muck has made its way into the water making it turbid.
“The production of treated water has been reduced at the plant and therefore we cannot pump enough water,” the source informed.
However, he said the situation was expected to be normalised in a day’s time.
Senior PWD engineers refused to take calls for an official comment.
