PANAJI: The Goa government has approached Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis with a request to allot land in Pandharpur or a nearby taluka for the construction of a Varkari Bhavan, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant informed the Assembly today.
The proposed facility is intended to provide accommodation and support for Goan Warkaris who undertake the annual pilgrimage to Pandharpur, a journey that sees nearly 5,000 devotees walk 370 km over two weeks. “People from Pernem to Canacona take part in this yatra. We will build the Bhavan as soon as possible,” Sawant told the House.
The announcement came in response to a private members’ resolution moved by MLA Premendra Shet, who urged the government to introduce a financial relief scheme for Pandharpur Warkaris. The resolution drew widespread support across party lines.
However, Goa Forward Party chief Vijai Sardesai criticised the delay, pointing out that the assurance had already been given a year ago. “This is not something that can be done overnight. Pandharpur is in Maharashtra, and their government’s cooperation is crucial,” Sardesai said.
Admitting that the scheme was delayed, Sawant said it had not been finalised last year, but promised quick action this time. “A proper scheme will be designed with inputs from the Art and Culture Department, the Social Welfare Department, or both,” he said. “Pilgrims will be able to apply two months before the next wari, and the financial assistance will be credited directly to their accounts.” He also assured the House that necessary budgetary provisions would be made for its implementation.
