In response to concerns raised by Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar in the Legislative Assembly, Sports Minister Govind Gaude addressed issues surrounding the maintenance of sports grounds managed by the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG).
During a session in the Assembly, MLA Arolkar queried whether the government was aware of the poor conditions plaguing various sports grounds due to inadequate maintenance. The Sports Minister confirmed that all maintenance responsibilities for playgrounds across Goa lie with the SAG.
Regarding efforts to identify grounds in need of maintenance, Gaude mentioned that the Technical Cell of the SAG regularly inspects these sites and prepares estimates for necessary upkeep works. However, he acknowledged that certain grounds, not covered under Annual Maintenance Contracts or managed by private organisations, have suffered neglect.
Highlighting specific concerns about safety, the Minister pointed out the deteriorating condition of the Morjim Sports Complex. He disclosed that steps are underway to assess the structural integrity of a building with a seating stand at the complex. The Public Works Department (PWD) has been notified to conduct a non-destructive test, the results of which will guide future actions to ensure safety.
Responding to queries about the government's broader strategy for maintaining all sports grounds in the State, Gaude referred to ongoing assessments and indicated that plans would be formulated based on the findings of the Technical Cell.
