Govt presses for approval to increase MBBS seats

PANAJI

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday met Union Health Minister J P Nadda to press for early approval of the Goa government’s proposal to add 50 MBBS seats at the Goa Medical College (GMC).

The proposal, already before the National Medical Commission (NMC), seeks to raise the annual intake from 200 to 250 seats, Sawant said in a post on X.

During the meeting in New Delhi, the Goa CM also thanked Nadda for the passage of the Goa Scheduled Tribes Political Reservation Bill in Parliament.

Last month, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane said the Directorate of Health Services had recommended increasing the GMC intake to 250, and was also preparing a plan to establish a nursing college at the South Goa District Hospital.

The NMC had last year allowed GMC to raise its MBBS capacity from 180 to 200 for the 2024“25 academic session. In 2019“20, the intake was increased from 150 to 180.
