Man caught on camera attacking activist arrested

The man who had audaciously attacked an activist last week, while he was addressing the media over an issue at the Azad Maidan in the capital city has finally landed in the police net after he surrendered.

Bhumi Varak, a resident of Khandepar, was arrested when he presented himself before the Ponda police on Monday morning.

He had carried out an audacious assault on Vasco-based businessman and RTI activist Munnalal Halwai which was caught on camera, Ponda police said.

Varak attacked Halwai by first garlanding him with chappals and then spraying his face with a black liquid. It was all caught on camera by local TV journalists.

Earlier in that week, Halwai was also attacked and his car damaged in Ponda. Police said, their investigations have led them to conclude that it was Varak who had attacked Halwai and damanged his vehicle in Ramnathi.

Meanwhile, in connection with the attack on Halwai at the Azad Maidan, the Panaji police too had booked an FIR.
