Tragedy struck when a Merces local Pramod Tukaram Naik drowned during Ganesh immersion on Wednesday night.
The body was later recovered on Thursday morning.
According to information available, Naik had gone for immersion along with other villagers, on Wednesday midnight, near a sluice gate at Merces when he got caught in an undercurrent and drowned during immersion.
“The locals as well as the fire brigade officials tried to trace Naik’s body till 4 am in the morning but were unable to do so. Later, the search operation was resumed in the morning and the body was recovered at around 11 am,” panch Sushant Govekar informed The Goan.
Sources informed that the body was sent for post-mortem in the GMC and later handed to the family for final rites.
