Barely two days ahead of the High Court deadline of June 20, Morjim Panchayat finally erected a public crematorium at Tembwada on Saturday.
The public crematorium has been a sensitive issue in Morjim, after a traditional crematorium at Bagwada was bought along with the land by a Delhi-based businessman. Six months ago, a landowner had also filed PIL in court after final rites were performed on his land.
The landlord had demanded a public crematorium to be built by the panchayat. The high court had directed the panchayat to build a public crematorium latest by June 20. Morjim Sarpanch Vaishali Shetgaonkar, Deputy Sarpanch Amit Shetgaonkar, panchas Mukesh Gadekar, Tushar Shetgaonkar and the panchayat secretary were present at the site of the new public crematorium, The panchayat members stated that a shed to store wood would be built shortly.
