A 37-year-old murder convict who was undergoing life imprisonment in the Colvale jail died while undergoing treatment in the North Goa District Hospital on Monday.
The cause of death is suspected to be heart attack.
The deceased, Shailesh Mapari, has been serving life imprisonment after he was convicted for murder in 2006.
According to jail authorities, the deceased was not keeping well for the last couple of days. On Monday morning, his condition worsened and he was first moved to the in-house dispensary in the jail and then shifted to the North Goa district hospital, Mapusa for further treatment.
Mapari, however, died while undergoing treatment at the district hospital.
The Additional Inspector General of Prisons Ashutosh Apte said the deceased was rushed to the district hospital but soon passed away while undergoing treatment.
“In the morning, the inmates raised an alarm after they found Mapari sinking. He was immediately rushed to the dispensary from where he was referred to the district hospital. He died while undergoing treatment. The doctors attending to him have said that he suffered a heart attack,” Apte said.
The Additional IGP refuted claims that there was delay in shifting Mapari to the district hospital due to unavailability of an ambulance.
“An ambulance is available in the jail throughout day and night and the dispensary functions round the clock,” he said.
The Mapusa police conducted the panchanama and preserved the body at the morgue. A report has also been submitted to the deputy collector for further action.
The convict, Shailesh Mapari, had stabbed his nephew, Sagar Chodankar, to death in September 2004. Mapari was then booked and arrested for murder under Section 302 of the IPC. A Mapusa court later convicted him for murder in 2006 and was sentenced to undergo life imprisonment.
