Members of National Students Union of India (NSUI) on Monday gheraoed the office of the registrar of Goa University protesting the decision of the GU to schedule offline examinations for students pursuing various degrees.
Speaking to The Goan, NSUI President Ahraz Mulla stated, “All students are highly anxious because during the entire academic year, the classes were held online. The entire syllabus has not been covered and the majority of the students have not understood major concepts listed in the syllabus. So many of us could not attend classes regularly due to network issues and we could not travel to meet our teachers. Everyone is worried about suffering a back and losing a year because the government merely wants to prove a point.”
He informed that the examinations have been scheduled to be held from December 28 till January 19, 2021. Around 6,000 to 7,000-odd students are scheduled to answer these examinations.
NSUI has also raised some serious concerns about the infrastructural readiness of the GU to handle this volume in view of the social distancing norms to keep the students and their families safe.
Meanwhile, NSUI has also voiced objection about the manner in which the GU registrar allegedly threatened the Afghan national students who had joined the protests.
“The manner in which the GU official spoke and threatened the Afghan students is unacceptable. They were warned that their visas would be cancelled. This is in extremely bad light because we are all in the same boat and they have every right to voice their issues,” Mulla stated.
