Condemning the communal clash in Baina on Sunday night, the Goa unit of National Confederation of Human Rights Organizations (NCHRO) has demanded that the State government fulfils its responsibility of preserving and promoting the secular and pluralistic fabric of society and ensuring the protection of all minorities.
“Goa has always been a peaceful and harmonious place. People, irrespective of their religious and cultural backgrounds, have intermingled and lived with each other happily,” stated a press note issued by NCHRO“Goa President Fr Savio Fernandes and NCHRO-Goa General Secretary Sayed Iftiyaz.
“Sadly in the last few years, several attempts are made by certain sections of society to denigrate minorities, attack them and thus disrupt communal harmony in the State. The latest is the communal clash in Baina on the occasion of the Ram Navami festival.”
“We at NCHRO unequivocally condemn such incidents. This is yet another attempt to provoke and disrupt the communal harmony in this peaceful State is more than obvious and this should be dealt with severely.”
The NCHRO“Goa has called upon the police and other officials concerned to book those responsible for the attacks.
“We further demand that the government fulfils its responsibility of preserving and promoting the secular and pluralistic fabric of our society, ensuring the protection of all minorities. Above all we, call upon all peace-loving citizens to act visibly and expeditiously in preventing our beloved Goa from turning into a communal cauldron,” the NCHRO“Goa added.
