The last time the pre-liberation era Assolna bridge was taken up for repairs was exactly a decade ago when the PWD employed the ‘Guniting” process to strengthen the bridge.
Reason: An inspection of the bridge in the year 2013 had unearthed that the iron rods of one of the spans had corroded. The PWD had carried out the work at an estimated cost of Rs 14 crore.
The PWD, however, had then maintained that the Assolna bridge is safe for public use and there ought to be no apprehensions over the stability of the bridge.
A decade down the line, people using the bridge have called for a structural stability test to ascertain the status of this vital bridge.
