MAPUSA
The Chief Officer of Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) Sitaram Sawal has asked the PWD to take up the work of reconstruction of cross drain at the Karaswada junction under the national highway on top priority and complete it before the forthcoming monsoon to avoid any flooding in the area.
“In a joint inspection with officials of WRD and urban health centre it has been observed that the existing cross drain at the Karaswada junction has not been reconstructed by the PWD while taking up the construction of the flyover at the location. This will affect the flow of rain water in the area during the monsoon,” Sawal said, in a letter to the Principal Chief Engineer of PWD.
He further stated that the existing cross drain appeared to be narrow and will not be sufficient to cater to the flow of rain water.
“You are requested to direct your concerned division to take up the work of reconstruction of the cross drain on top priority and complete the same before the onset of the monsoon to avoid any flooding in the area,” the chief officer said.
The CO’s direction to the PWD chief came after the locals brought to his attention about an imminent threat of flooding in the area if the cross drain was not fixed.
The residents of Zamucalim, Mapusa, near Karaswada, had complained to the civic body about permission issued to a new construction in the area which could block the natural flow of water and thereby cause flooding.
They also informed the chief officer that the cross drain running under the national highway was narrow in width and will not be able to take the rush of water during heavy rain.
In the meanwhile, the chief officer has fixed an inspection of the ongoing construction project in the fields in Zamucalim on April 6.
