Record 104 cases triggers panic in Canacona taluka

CANACONA
A record 104 new cases on Wednesday triggered panic among people in Canacona taluka.

Medical staff at the Canacona Community Health Centre were struggling to carry out tests as several people from all over Canacona taluka were pouring into the hospital with Covid like symptoms.

By 5 pm, about 104 new cases were detected in the Antigen tests conducted at CHC alone and the figure was reportedly counting, as results of samples sent for examination to the South Goa District Hospital were awaited, informed a source.

The active Covid cases have now shot up to 401, taking the overall count to 1,356 in the taluka.

Meanwhile, residents who had decided to hold talks with Canacona traders to voluntarily impose a shutdown in Canacona amid rising Covid cases, have welcomed the government’s declaration of a 4-day lockdown.

“However, a 4-day lockdown is insufficient considering the manner in which Covid cases are detected in Canacona. Considering the situation prevailing in the taluka, we may have to decide to have an extended voluntary shut down by 4-8 days,” said Shantaji Naikgaunkar, Convener of Canacona Citizen Samiti(CNS).

Meanwhile, Councillor Ramakant Naikgaunkar said the council meeting on Thursday had been postponed following the death of CMC Chairperson Simon Rebello’s father.

“The council will meet later and will also deliberate on suspending the weekly Saturday bazaar for at least two months. The weekly bazaar will not operate this Saturday as a state-level lockdown is in force,” said Naikgaunkar.

Local leader, Janardhan Bhandari, has said all leaders would work with the government keeping aside political differences, to keep people safe.

“Considering the spike in Covid cases, we may need an extension of lockdown at least in Canacona and we Canconcars will together decide about it at an appropriate time,” he said.

Councillor Dhiraj Naikgaunkar, Anil Bhagat and a few others were present at the media briefing outside the Canacona Municipal Council office.

MAPUSAPorts Minister Michael Lobo refused to take the blame on decisions to either impose tougher measures or over the delay to impose a lockdown in the State and said it was the responsibility of everyone to fight the Covid pandemic.“We cannot say who is responsible for the present Covid situation in the State. It’s the responsibility of everyone. Four months back, I had said we cannot have stricter SOPs as at that time there were many tourists in Goa. Our economy runs on…
