Welcoming some steps initiated by the government to resolve issues at the sub-registrar offices, Mapusa Advocates Forum President Paresh Rao on Wednesday said that there were several issues which affected the functioning of the Mapusa sub-registrar office.
Rao also slammed attempts to portray that the majority of the advocates in Bardez were involved in the land scam which was far from the truth.
“The Law Minister, Nilesh Cabral has said that work will be given to other sub-registrars which is a welcome step because it will reduce the time taken for registration,” Rao said.
However, he said there were a host of other issues in the office of the Mapusa sub-registrar including relating to infrastructure which has to be tackled in a time-bound manner.
He said there were only two people manning the computers in the Mapusa office to make entries while in a State like Karnataka there are eight stations only to make entries.
“In spite of so much work in Bardez, only two people are sitting on the computers for feeding of the data. A more cheap option is to buy three or four more computers. It’s not expensive. If they cannot increase the sub-registrars then increase the computers,” he said.
He said as of now the entire feeding is done by the advocates and only the final uploading is done in the office.
He further said that there was no provision of a toilet in the office which is frequented by senior citizens and even women who at times have to remain in the office throughout the day.
Rao informed that the forum had written to the power minister around two months ago elaborating the problems affecting the Mapusa sub-registrar and listing a series of demands but the government slept over it.
He said in a recent general body meeting of the Mapusa Advocates Forum it was decided that the forum should approach the government with fresh demands and give it time of 15 days to redress the grievances.
“Our demands are legitimate, rational and very reasonable. If the government does not take any action in 15 days then we have decided to boycott the sub-registrar and protest in front of the office,” he said and added, “Even if that does not work we decided to take legal action against the government and the department”.
