Following the footsteps of the Anjuna panchayat, the sarpanch of Saligao panchayat, Lucas Remedios on Tuesday said that all the nine elected members have come together as an Independent group to work for the village and is not backed by any political party or politician.
Remedios also said that all the nine panchayat members have got elected on their own merit and no politician has worked for them during the election.
“A group of Independent panchayat members have elected me as the sarpanch of the village. We are not affiliated to any politician or political party. The MLAs may claim that it’s their panel but during the election they have not supported any of us,” Remedios said.
He said several of the elected members owe allegiance to different political parties but in the panchayat the group will maintain its independent identity.
“I am a Congressman and will always be so. But in the panchayat we have no political affiliation,” he reiterated.
He further said that all nine panchayat members will work together for the development of the village.
“We have got elected because we have done development in the village and will continue to do so. We will complete all pending works. Providing good roads and finding space to set up a cattle pound to take care of stray cattle will be top of the agenda for the panchayat,” the sarpanch said.
Interestingly, former MLA Jayesh Salgoankar had claimed that Saligao panchayat was backed by him.
