In recent months, the tourism sector in Goa has been a hot topic on social media and news platforms. While water sports and beach activities have drawn many tourists to the region, beach shack owners have mixed feelings about their impact on business.
Several shack operators have shared their concerns regarding the water sports activities near their shacks. While some believe these activities help attract more visitors, others feel that the disturbances caused by them are affecting their business operations.
Jerry Fernandes, a shack owner from Candolim, expressed his frustration with water sports operators near his shack. Having been in the business for over two decades, he explained that the noise, the smell of petrol, and the crowds created by the water sports activities make it difficult to provide a peaceful environment for his customers. He also mentioned that tourists often have trouble accessing the beach due to the large number of water sports counters set up near his shack. This not only blocks the path but also creates a chaotic atmosphere, he complained.
Another major issue, Fernandes said, is the presence of touts who harass tourists, both on the beach and at the shacks. He pointed out that some touts even enter shacks and disturb guests who are trying to relax. Fernandes suggested that there should be designated areas for water sports away from the shacks, which would allow tourists to enjoy a quieter beach experience without disturbances. He also called for stronger action against the increasing number of touts, saying that this problem is growing every day.
Moses, another shack operator, said there are both pros and cons to the rise in water sports activities. He acknowledged that while the water sports business can attract more tourists, it is important to maintain discipline and avoid disturbing the shack operators. Moses mentioned that the main water sports counter at Candolim Beach often blocks the entrance to his shack, making it difficult for tourists to access the beach and his services. He suggested that if the water sports activities were better organised and adhered to regulations, it would improve the situation for everyone.
A shack owner from Baga beach also shared his concerns, noting that large crowds for water sports sometimes make it hard for tourists to reach the shacks. While he agreed that water sports do attract more visitors to the beach, he highlighted the need for better control over the activities. He also highlighted the problem of touts and harassment, saying that tourists should not be forced into buying water sports packages or services.
