Raising serious questions over the Cabinet decision to set up a private medical college at the South Goa district hospital, Goa Forward Chief Vijai Sardesai reminded the government that the prime objective behind the South Goa district hospital was to tide over the space constraints and provide better medical facilities to the citizens of South Goa.
Asserting that the private medical college was never part of the intended objective of the district hospital, Sardesai demanded that the government come clear on the project before going ahead with the proposal.
Saying that the district hospital has been set up in his Fatorda constituency by displacing farmers by purchasing their land for a pittance, Sardesai questioned how the government can set up a private medical college at the site when it has not unveiled any plan to compensate the land losers.
Referring to the High Court's directions to the government to fill up vacancies and upgrade the infrastructure at the district hospital, Vijai said, “I want to ask the government whether the vacancies and other infrastructure would be toned up before the private player is roped in to run the private medical college.”
“I would also like to know whether the government has taken the medical fraternity on board before taking the decision to set up the private medical college. Is a private medical college really needed when the existing institutions churn out hundreds of doctors every year,” he said.
