North Goa MP flags poor condition of Goa“Belagavi highways in Parliament; urges repairs before New Year

PANAJI: North Goa MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade today raised concerns in Parliament over the condition of the Goa“Belagavi National Highways, which pass through Anmod Ghat and Chorla Ghat.

He said these highways are crucial for both Goa and Karnataka, carrying passengers, agricultural produce, and essential goods every day. Several stretches are in poor condition, Tanavade added, with the ghat sections narrow, landslide-prone, and often blocked during the monsoon. He said recent rains caused parts of Anmod Ghat to collapse, leaving commuters stranded for hours or even days, with no alternate route through the forested, hilly terrain.

Tanavade also pointed out Goa’s strong links with Belagavi for medical, educational, commercial, and family needs, noting that nearly 80% of the State’s vegetables and fruits come through these routes.

With the New Year approaching, he said it is essential to keep the highways in good condition to avoid disruption of supplies and hardship for thousands of families and traders.

He urged the government to prioritize the repair and strengthening of the ghat sections, introduce proper monitoring, warning systems, and rescue arrangements, and speed up ongoing works to ensure the highways remain safe, motorable, and reliable year-round.
