Cong willing to make sacrifices for Grand Oppn Alliance: Yuri

Opposition leader Yuri Alemao is pushing for a Grand Opposition Alliance (GOA) to dislodge the BJP in 2027.

MARGAO
Post wins in the just-concluded Zilla Panchayat election and the election for the Goa University Students’ Council, the Leader of the Opposition has once again pushed for the Grand Opposition Alliance (GOA), saying it is "a need of the hour in the interest of Goa and Goans to dislodge the BJP from power in 2027".
The Opposition leader further said that the Congress party, being the principal Opposition party, is ready to make sacrifices and compromises and act as an “envelope” and “cover” for the regional parties to come together in the interest of Goa.
Virtually rejecting the friendly fight concept witnessed in the just-concluded ZP polls, Yuri said he is of the firm opinion that one needs to play an election to win, and not simply play for the sake of playing.
“We can see that 60 per cent of the people of Goa are against the BJP. Basically, the BJP’s number of seats can be brought down to single digits in 2027,” he said.
Alliance with RGP?
To a question on the Congress’s stand on an alliance with the Revolutionary Goans Party, the Leader of the Opposition said he is of the strong opinion that all forces, including people who want to leave the BJP over the party’s arrogance and corruption, should come together to dislodge the government in 2027.
“As LoP, I will make sure that we will try and get all forces together. The Congress should act like an envelope and cover to bring the regional parties together. We have to resolve our differences. Everyone is in favour of an alliance. We will not let down the people. The alliance has to happen soon and we cannot wait until the last minute to take a decision,” he asserted.
'AAP leaders, MLAs favour alliance'
Saying that the local leadership of the Aam Aadmi Party, including the two MLAs, favours an opposition alliance to defeat the BJP, Opposition Leader Yuri Alemao gave an open call to AAP leaders and MLAs to think differently in the new year if they are feeling suffocated in the party.
He was categorical in saying that AAP state leaders and MLAs were all for an alliance in Goa, but the party’s Delhi leadership is opposed to such an alliance.
“If the AAP leaders and MLAs are suffocating in the Arvind Kejriwal party, they should think differently in the New Year,” he said, indicating that the Congress should not leave any of the non-BJP forces out of the proposed Grande Opposition Alliance (GOA).
