In a tourist hotspot, Calangute traffic cops left in the dark over unpaid power bill

The very office tasked with keeping Calangute’s chaotic roads in order has been left in the dark, literally, after its electricity was snapped over unpaid dues of more than Rs 8.1 lakh.

The Calangute traffic police office has been without power for the past five days after electricity supply was disconnected over bills pending since 2023. This has crippled routine operations and forced personnel to work by candlelight after sunset.

With computers down and systems offline, tourists and commuters have been unable to pay traffic challans.

Sources said the dues had piled up over nearly three years before the electricity department finally pulled the plug.

Power supply had not been restored till the filing of this report, as the outstanding amount remains unpaid.
