The State government has identified the existing Maritime School run by the River Navigation Department at Britona for upgradation to a world class 'Centre of Excellence' in maritime education.

In fact, the Captain of Ports has called for 'Request For Proposal' bids from national and international institutions in the field.

The centre at Britona is being proposed to be redeveloped on a Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) basis to bring in maritime education expertise on board.

The detailed RFP conditions and bid documents were uploaded on the State government's e-procure website on Wednesday.

Goa has a deep rooted tradition of its youth opting to make a sailing career but have to rely on foreign institutes to upskill and pursue courses necessary to climb the career ladder.

The strength of serving seafarers in the State is estimated to be almost 10% of the State's population.
