MARGAO
The fourth consecutive cultivation of the Salpem Lake fields has begun under the leadership of Fr. George Quadros, popularly known as the “Paddy man of Goa”, as the farmers have resolved to extend the cultivation to more than three lakh square metres area.
The Salpem fields had remained fallow and uncultivated for more than 30 years.
Through the dedicated efforts of Fr George Quadros, with the support of local farmers, the Mechanical Cultivation Centre, Margao, and the Zonal Agriculture Department, South Goa, the abandoned land has once again been brought under cultivation. This year, cultivation has been extended to more than 3 lakh square metres of land.
Farmers say the initiative has played a significant role in reviving agriculture, protecting the environment, and preserving Goa’s rich farming heritage. It has also encouraged the local community to recognize the importance of conserving fertile agricultural land for future generations.
As another farming season begins, the project continues to inspire people with its simple yet powerful message: “Save and Protect Mother Nature.”
